How Not to Get Ripped Off on Car Repairs: Lessons from a Woman …

“From the blog Financially Fit: “I may be the only woman in the room, but I can go toe to toe with anybody when it comes to fixing cars,” Audra Fordin, the owner of …shine.yahoo.com/…/not-ripped-off-car-repairs-lessons-woman…”

Here are her top money-saving tips:

1. Changing your coolant on time can save you at least a thousand dollars in car repairs over the course of your car’s lifetime. It helps keep your car cool in the summer and warm in the winter. If you ignore the coolant, your engine can overheat. Fordin says it’s worth the couple hundred of dollars it will cost to drain the entire system of coolant every few years before replacing it with new fluid. Consult your manual to see the exact timing for your car.

2. Maintaining the correct tire pressure has a “massive chain effect,” Fordin says, on the health of your car. The car body will be….

Transmission Repair and rebuild  video for General Motors automatic transmission.

Transmission Repair Replacement Strategy

by Andrew Stratton

Car trouble can be one of the most annoying and frustrating circumstances that can come into your day. Usually it happens as a surprise, and usually it ends up costing you money. Although there are much more serious and devastating things that can take place in your life, sometimes when your car first breaks down it can feel like a big deal. When your car initially breaks down, you will not necessarily know what is wrong, so perhaps you will have hope that it will not be too costly. Then when a mechanic tells you that you need a transmission replacement, you know it really is a bad day.

Even on a bad day though when you find out you need a transmission replacement, there is hope for some encouragement. Perhaps you have already found a great mechanic who does this work. If you have not, then the right shop could make you very happy by charging a price that you can deal with. Of course your day would be much happier still if you find out that your warranty is still in place, and the transmission replacement will be free, but this is not always the case. Most vehicles will probably decide to wait until after the first 100,000 miles.

Although you might find a mechanic that will give you a better deal than others, it will still be a costly part to purchase or even have rebuilt. When this realization comes to you, you will need some encouragement. Maybe it will help you feel better when you are offered a ride home on a complementary shuttle and told that there was no charge for your vehicle to be towed to the shop. Maybe it will be a small pint of that favorite chunky delicious ice cream. It is possible it will just be a few things combined that will help you feel that the world is not at an end. Hopefully by the time your car is ready to be picked up, you will be able to accept the fact that you will be paying out some money that day, but at least you probably will not have to worry about having a transmission replacement again any time soon.

If you are reading this and have never had to worry about a transmission replacement, it could still be in your future. Knowing this should drive you to find a mechanic that you can trust to charge you a fair price and give you what you need to make that future day not quite as rough.

At Comfort Auto Repair We Love Repairing and maintaining Honda Vehicles. Even though Honda has a great reputation for creating long lasting, dependable, vehicles, it is important to keep up on your preventive maintenance for your Honda.

A look at Honda future products

The new engines have direct injection and double-overhead cams. They will produce at least a 10 percent fuel economy advantage over Honda’s current four-cylinders.

Earth Dreams engines will be added as each vehicle is redesigned, and in some cases will be available for mid-cycle revisions. Even the base four-cylinder will have a twin-cam profile setup, variable valve timing and direct injection. And there also is talk of bringing a 1.6-liter diesel with 220 pounds-feet of torque to the United States.

Honda also is putting heavy emphasis on continuously variable transmissions. While performance models and off-road vehicles will retain geared transmissions, mainstream cars will have CVTs.

With the introduction of Honda’s large-car hybrid power train system next year, more vehicles in the

The CR-Z Concept 2009 is the world’s first hybrid vehicle equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. Together with a 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine the vehicle will create completely new value by combining the fun of driving and outstanding fuel economy. The compact, lightweight and highly efficient Honda hybrid system, known as IMA, is packaged within an advanced form based on a “low, short, and wide” design concept. We plan to launch a production automobile based on the CR-Z Concept 2009 in Japan in February of next year, and then in Europe and North America.

Finding the Right Transmission Repair Shop

by Ace Abbey

Finding the right transmission repair shop doesn’t have to be difficult. Instead of choosing a place at random, you could take a more involved approach. For example, you could ask around. Some people tend to shun the idea of word of mouth advertisements. In their eyes going this route makes for unreliable advice. However, sometimes the best advice you can get is from someone with experience. That’s because they can tell you exactly what to expect and most times they will give you a completely honest opinion. So, ask some of the people you work with, family members and friends. If they haven’t had experience with a transmission repair shop themselves, they probably know someone who has.

Although asking around can be a good place to start, there is more you should do. Conduct a little extra research. Go online and see if the transmission repair shop has a website. If they do, take a few minutes to navigate the site and see all they have to offer. One of the most important things you want to look for is experience. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the establishment has to be decades old. However, you should ensure that the workers aren’t uncertified amateurs. If you can’t find this information on the webpage, you may want to call and ask. You should also look for testimonials. Even though you may have already gotten information from your family members and associates, it doesn’t hurt to get other opinions.

Now, you may run into a transmission repair shop that doesn’t have an official website. This isn’t any reason to turn your nose up at them. The business may be just starting out or they may not be able to afford a personal webpage. Then, there are those who don’t see it as something useful. Whatever the case, a great way to get to know more about these establishments would be to stop in for a personal visit. See if you can talk directly with the owner or manager about some of the things they have to offer. Let them sell their business to you. This will give you a better idea of whether or not the entity suits your specific needs and desires.

Try to remember that no matter how much research you do, no transmission repair shop is perfect. So, don’t get discouraged if you happen to patronize a place that doesn’t give you the results you were hoping for. Most people can attest to the fact that they have entrusted an entity that let them down. Just use the experience as a learning opportunity that will help you make better decisions in the future.

5 Car Repair Mistakes

How’s the old heap running these days? I say “old” because we’re keeping our wheels longer. The average age of U.S. vehicles reached an all-time high in 2011, according to the Polk auto data service: 11.1 years for cars and 10.4 for light trucks and SUVs.

Every year without a car payment is a good year. The best way to extend that obligation-free period is to be assiduous about maintenance. “Jalopy love: 5 dumb car-repair mistakes to avoid,” on the Insurance.com blog, reminds us why being penny-wise is definitely pound-foolish.

For example, you should never ignore the “low fuel” dashboard light — and not just because you might run out of gas.

“Driving a fuel-injected engine frequently on a very low tank is hard on the fuel pump,” writes author Barbara Marquand.

It’s tempting to hold out for the cheapest gas you can find. To spare your fuel pump, don’t let the needle go below one-quarter of a tank. MSN Autos has an online tool to help you find the best gas price in your area. Or use a…More at 5 car-repair mistakes – MSN Money

Vehicle Maintenance Keeps Your Vehicle Moving

Do You Know What’s Involved in The Vehicle Maintenance of Your Car?

Just doing a little bit of preventive vehicle maintenance will help to keep you safely driving while reducing your overall auto expenses.

Be Sure to Check Your Brakes

Have your professional auto repair mechanic check your brakes. Definitely replace your brake pads if they are worn down.

Your brakes should be inspected every six months. Keep in mind that your brakes are the most important safety feature in your vehicle.

Washing Your Vehicle

Proper vehicle maintenance also involves washing it and waxing it regularly. Wash the exterior of your vehicle with soapy water and a rag. Vacuum the carpets and remove any stains with stain remover and a brush.

Replacing the Timing Belt

Replace the timing belt. Stick to the manufacturer’s recommended replacement interval, which is usually every 60,000-80,000 miles. Consult your auto repair mechanic or check your owners manual. Failure to replace the timing belt, in a timely manner can result in a very costly engine repair.

Having An Oil Change

Good vehicle maintenance involves changing the motor oil and oil filter regularly.

Vehicle Maintenance

Vehicle maintenance keeps you moving

With the popularity of summer road trips, Robertson recommended several key areas to check on your vehicle before starting your adventure:

Tires – These are most affected by heat. If your vehicle’s tires are more than six years old, it’s time to replace them.

“Even if the tires have good treads, the UV rays will break down the compounds in the tires,” Robertson said. “It’s like they’re rotting from the inside-out.”

Many of the shredded tire pieces thrown by large trucks on the highways are the result of tires worn out from the heat and UV rays, he said.

“Low tire pressure also breaks down tires faster, especially with a heavy load.”

Batteries – They fail in heat as well as cold. According to AAA, summer heat can have a more negative impact on a vehicle’s battery than freezing winter temperatures.

“Heat and vibration are a battery’s worst enemies, leading to internal breakdown and eventual failure,” AAA says.

At Tom’s and at other auto mechanics’ shops, the battery typically is checked at every oil and filter change.

Batteries should be checked frequently, especially if they’re more than
