How do I tell if my vehicle needs a Tune Up?

Automobile Tune Up List

An Automobile Tune Up involves a regularly scheduled maintenance program, usually around once a year, to check out and perform any preventative maintenance that should to be done.

By ensuring that your car gets its ‘tune up’ regularly, it will help to maintain the overall performance of your car’s engine and extend its life, while offering you piece of mind.

Most of the repair techniques that we generally consider being under the heading of  ‘getting an Automobile Tune Up’,  are now handled electronically.

Here Is A Basic List Of  What Is Needed, Or Done During An Automobile Tune Up

Basic Ignition Parts:

Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are good indicators of engine condition. Removing and inspecting spark plugs will tell you how well the engine is running and if there is a problem,what may be causing it.

Recommendation:
All spark plugs should be removed and checked around every 30,000 miles – even if it is recommended to change spark plugs at 100,000 miles.

Spark Plug Wires

Spark plug wires are now less of a problem. New materials have reduced failures and electronic ignitions have increased operating ranges.

Automobile Tune Up Recommendation:
These Items should be tested for proper resistance before any automatic replacement, since they should no longer be replaced routinely along with the distributor cap, rotor or spark plugs.

Distributor Cap and Rotor

Both the distributor cap and the rotor are made from plastic based materials and will deteriorate with age and usage. Cracks can happen, which will then allow moisture in, causing the metal contacts to corrode, which can lead to a  misfiring.

Automobile Tune Up Recommendation:
These parts should be replaced at recommended intervals or if showing any excessive wear.

Vehicle Filters

Do you know that more than any other single maintenance factor, regularly changing your filters may have a lot to do to increase your car’s lifespan?

Oil Filter

Oil filters help prevent unnecessary engine wear. The job of the oil filter is to lubricate engine parts, remove soot and particles along with other contaminants from the engine parts.

Automobile Tune Up Recommendation:
Oil filters should always be replaced along with the engine.

Fuel Filter

If contaminants get into your fuel system and are not caught by the fuel filter, they can clog the injector inlet screens. If dirt reaches the injector itself, it can clog or damage the pintle valve and seat.
In older cars, any dirt can plug and or damage the carburetor.

If the fuel filter is not replaced regularly, the flow of fuel to the engine can become restricted, resulting in sputtering, stalling, loss of power and a hard to start vehicle.

Automobile Tune Up Recommendation:
It’s a good idea to change the fuel filter around every 30,000 miles or so. But a good idea is to change whenever other fuel system parts are replaced to insure overall performance.

Air Filter

The air filters job is to trap dirt as the air passes through the filter. In older vehicles, They also protect the carburetor by preventing dirt from clogging the air bleeds and jets. In later-model vehicles, they help protect fuel injectors fro dirty air particles .

Automobile Tune Up Recommendation:
Air filters should be definitely be checked around every 20,000 miles, but its better to check more often if you live or drive in regions that are dusty.
If you air filter looks pretty dirty, it should be replaced regardless of the age or number of miles put on the car.

Automatic Transmission Filter

Your transmission filter the transmission fluid which lubricates the moving parts of the transmission to keep it running at a cooler temperature.

When a transmission filter get clogged up, it can cause, transmission hesitation, slippage, and engagement problems.

Automobile Tune Up Recommendation:
Your transmission filter should be changed around every 12,000-15,000 miles to help keep your automatic transmission parts healthy.

PCV Breather Filter

Your PCV breather filter insures that clean, filtered air is drawn in through the PCV breather. A clogged filter prevents a siphoning away of the moisture and blowby gases which are created by the engine’s combustion. This results in a breakdown of oil quality and encourages a sludge buildup in your engine.

Automobile Tune Up Recommendation:
The PCV breather filter should be replaced around every 30,000 or so miles; however, doing a yearly replacement is also a good preventive maintenance practice.

Other Tune Up Maintenance Parts

Some tune up parts are sometimes seen as non-essential. But the functions of these parts will add benefits to your tuneup. And as emission-pollution laws have gotten stronger, these have become essential components to check on if you want your car to easily pass any state emissions testing on the first go-round.

Vacuum Hoses:

All of your vacuum hoses should be checked and then replaced as needed. Because even just a very small leak will cause major problems with your vehicles performance, and in some cases, the car won’t even run.

O2 Sensor – Oxygen Sensor

Your oxygen sensor should probably be replaced at the manufacturers recommended suggestions because a worn out oxygen sensor can cause a change in your engines settings.

Temperature Sensors:

Because these sensors control the exhaust system, the fuel injection system, and your vehicles cooling system, they can  create engine performance problems.
