And it stands to reason, but not always, that the older a car is, the more mileage it has; meaning it has gone through more wear and tear.

But don’t let a used vehicle with higher mileage put you off completely. If the owner has kept the car up with regular oil changes, and followed a recommended preventive maintenance plan, chances are the car’s engine will still be in good shape.

Looking for the following red flags:

Signs of poor alignment: Tires.

Check the tires for wear. Uneven tire wear — balding on the sides or in the middle — could indicate the need for a front-end alignment or perhaps a much more expensive repair to the suspension.

Possible signs of body repair:

Bring along a small refrigerator magnet and place it very gently  along various body panels. If there’s any plastic body filler present, the magnet won’t stay in place, indicating the car has been involved in an accident. If the seller is honest, this really is no big deal. But stand away from the car and look at its panels and seams. Does every thing line up correctly? If not, find another car.
